"Do you expect me to talk, Goldfinger?"

There's always a lot of debate over who was the best Bond. This debate reignites every few years, as a long-in-the tooth actor bows out of the role and the search for a new man to embody suave, brutal sophistication begins. My list is as follows:
  1. Sean Connery
  2. George Lazenby
  3. Pierce Brosnan
  4. Daniel Craig
  5. Roger Moore
  6. Timothy Dalton

Who was the best Bond ever? is a no-brainer: Sean Connery, who turns 80 today.

(I would do naughty things to this man, were I unmarried. Yes, even now.)

Best Bond flick? It's a toss-up between "Thunderball," or "Diamonds are Forever." (Though I liked "Never Say Never Again...")

Give me your own fave Bonds in the comments!

  1. I'd flip 3 and 4, but otherwise spot on.

  2. Sean Connery IS Bond. The others are just actors.

  3. I think I would have to put Lazenby tied with Dalton for dead last. Craig beats Brosnon in my opinion, but I agree Brosnon trumps Moore. That leaves Connery as the one who defines the role for my money.

  4. I dunno. I really, really like Daniel Craig in this role. Unfortunately, I came of age during the Roger Moore years, with his smarminess and smirking. Ugh. And my mom was a HUGE Sean Connery fan, which probably has something to do with my not being a huge fan of him as Bond.

  5. I think that Brosnan has the looks, and the voice, while Craig has the attitude and the lithe body for the role. If I could just make a Brosnan/Craig mashup I would be happy.

I like Connery in this role, but I don't like Connery as a person. So that bumps him down to 3. The others were too wooden or smarmy to warrant attention. Even if I do watch all of the movies over and over.

  6. Well, I can agree with you on your first and last choices. Otherwise, I'd have to put Daniels in the #2 spot, Brosnan in 3rd, Moore 4th, and Lazenby 5th. As another poster said, Brosnan had the smooth, polished demeanor that the role calls for, but as Casino Royale was the beginning of Bond's career, I think Daniels hit that rough, edgy Bond style spot on. Oh yeah, and he's yummylicious.

  7. 1. Sean Connery.
    2. George Lazenby.
    3. Roger Moore.
    4. The last Roger Moore Bond film I saw ("View To a Kill") was a pile of crap, and I stopped watching Bond films after that one.

  8. I think it all depends on what you like as far as the character of Bond. Do you like the stone cold killer (Craig)? The playboy agent with way too much baggage (Dalton)? The goofball (Moore)? The confident self assured (Connery, Brosnan)?

Me, I like them all, and each brought something different to the role. I'd probably rank them
    1) Moore
    2) Connery
    3) Brosnan
    4) Dalton
    5) Lazenby

It just depends on what tends to resonate with you.
